Guided Walks November & December 2011

From time to time, the Banks Peninsula Conservation Trust organises guided walks. These walks listed below have PAST now, but keep watching this page as we plan more walks for 2012.

The Banks Peninsula Conservation Trust organises guided walks for people to experience a variety of different habitats and landscapes on the peninsula. Walks are run as fundraisers, with funds going directly toward habitat protection, predator control, and helping protect native animal and bird species (eg tui, which were reintroduced in 2009 and 2010).

Flea Bay/ Pohatu: Francis & Shireen Helps, BPCT

Saturday 12 November 2011, 11 am - 4 pm
Medium / Hard walk
A family trip that is one of the most popular guided walks. The trip is led by Francis and Shireen Helps, who have extensive knowledge of the natural history of this bay where they live and farm. Don't underestimate the amount of walking required as this is a full-day outing. The walk is downhill through regenerating bush, before descending through open farmland. This is a chance to learn more about the white-flippered little blue penguin, wetas, and jewelled gecko.

There are extensive views over Kaitorete and the Pacific Ocean. A good level of fitness is required as the walk is 3-4 hours long.

Fishermans Bay: Jill & Richard Simpson, BPCT

Saturday 3 December 2011, 11 am - 2 pm
Medium walk

This trip is at a medium level of fitness, and is a very special place to visit. Led by Richard and Jill Simpson (two founding members of the Banks Peninsula Conservation Trust) the walk is down to the highly attractive coastline at Fishermans Bay and back up the same hill following a grassy vehicle track. This wild and scenic bay offers dramatic views and is often visited by seals and penguins.
