Rod Carr

Rod completed a five year term as the inaugural chair of the Climate Change Commission in December 2024. Previously he had served as Vice Chancellor of the University of Canterbury (2009-2019), Chief Executive of Jade Software Corporation Ltd (2003-2009) and as Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of New Zealand (1998-2003). He was a trustee of the Christchurch Earthquake Appeal Trust (2011-2024), the Christchurch Arts Centre (2017-2023) and the Christchurch Arts Festival (2011). He has been an independent director and for three years Chair of the Reserve Bank Board (2012-2017), a director of Lyttelton Port Company Ltd (2006-2016) and of Otakaro Ltd (2019-2023). He has a PhD in insurance and risk management, is married with four children and four grand children all resident in New Zealand. He has run 23 marathons, most recently in 2019 in Pyongyang North Korea and inside the Polar Circle in Greenland. He and his wife have recently established a trust to take ownership of 14 ha of regenerating native bush which is part of a farm forestry venture established in the 1980s on the Waingawa River in the Wairarapa bordering the Tararua State Forest Park. His family company, COG Power Ltd., provides ‘solar as a service’ to charitable organisations, schools and small businesses. Clients include The Kind Foundation (formerly the YMCA) and Rangiora High School.
